Being in Colorado, you may have heard that we were dumped on a few weeks ago. In Fort Collins, we received about 27 inches of snow in a day. We live on a large corner lot and after spending a weekend shoveling out, I finally broke down and ordered a snow blower. I did lots of research online and thought I'd give Amazon a try. I was surprised to see that this was part of the Prime shipping and I could get it overnight for only $3.99 shipping.
However, when I tried to checkout, the item showed a $49 shipping charge and did not allow for overnight shipping. This is fine and I understand because the item is so large but Amazon should fix their site to not show that this item is eligible for Prime shipping. I was confused and thought perhaps the $49 charge was for an oversize item but it would still arrive overnight. No such luck. I ordered it anyway for future snow storms.
The snow thrower arrived via freight truck. It was very well packaged and easy to unpack. Basically you just have to open the handle and tighten it. It even comes with oil already and the levels were fine so I didn't have to add oil. I was removing the plastic tie wraps and got carried away and accidentally cut off the tie wraps that hold the Auger wire and the Wheel power wire. So be careful and don't cut those plastic ties off. The manual clearly points these out and actually tells you to tighten them.
We got another small snow storm last night and I was excited to get out and put the snow thrower to good use. I woke up and added fuel to the machine and try to pull the rotary pull and it was locked. It just would not pull at all. I made sure the key was inserted and nothing was blocking the auger. No luck. I was starting to regret ordering online as I did NOT want to have to ship this thing back. I wouldn't even know how to arrange freight shipping and can't imagine what that would cost.
I spent about two hours online and reading the manual with no luck. I contacted Yard Machines and talked to a live person. They said this was an engine issue and directed me to Tecumseh for support. I couldn't contact a live person and their site had no troubleshooting advice. They just had service center listings. I called Yard Machines again and the person was very friendly and knowledgeable and walked me through several things. Eventually, we realized I had to take it in for warranty service. I took it in to a service center and they found that there was a loose bolt on the rotary pull inside that must not have been installed properly at the factory. They fixed it and everything is great now. I reduced this review by one star because of this problem. It is obvious that they are not tested before leaving the factory or this issue would have been caught. There may be some issues with having gas in a machine and shipping it though. Anyway, quality control could have been better.
Once the snow thrower was operational, it was amazing. We had an old electric one that was so awful that I would rather shovel. This plowed through 20+' of snow with no problems. Some areas with 25+' of snow required two passes. The snow was about two weeks old and had ice and was pretty dense. This posed no problem and the Yard Machines made quick work of removing the snow. It never hesitated. I widened our sidewalks, driveways and dug out a car in just an hour (originally took about 6-8 hours shoveling).
I love the fact that this snow thrower is self-propelled. It is very heavy and I can't imagine pushing this thing through the snow. It has an excellent height, throws the snow an excellent distance so I wasn't throwing snow on already cleared areas.
Overall PRO's:
- Excellent power (even broke up ice chunks and heavy snow)
- Extremely easy assembly (pretty much entirely assembled and includes oil)
- Good height clearance for large amounts of snow
- Good self-propelling power with excellent grippy tires
- Convenient tool to unplug the chute attached to machine. Although, the machine was buried in heavy snow and never got plugged up.
Overall CONS:
- My particular model had a loose bolt from the factory requiring immediate service. Probably just a fluke though. If you get one and the recoil starter won't pull, it might be the same issue.
- Auger handle and Wheel movement handle are somewhat awkward. One is on top and one on bottom and you grip both with your hands. It takes a second or two of though to release one and not the other. (I ran into my car once or twice because I couldn't let go of the wheel handle quick enough). I started getting use to this by the end of the day though. I think if the handles were seperated (e.g. auger on left side and wheels on right side) it might be easier to release just one or the other.![Mtd 5hp 22 inch snowblower manual Mtd 5hp 22 inch snowblower manual](https://www.justsnowblowers.ca/images/pl/Yard-Machines-MTD-22-inch-snowblower-lg.jpg)
